Liposuction might trigger visceral fat buildup

June 14, 2012

The popular surgical procedure removes fat located directly under the skin. But a study in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism reveals the sudden removal of fat around the abdomen seems to trigger a buildup of fat around the internal organs.

This visceral fat has been linked to a higher risk of diabetes and heart disease.

What's encouraging is the same research team found the growth of that visceral fat can be prevented if patients start an exercise program soon after their surgery.
