Fewer women getting mammograms

June 28, 2012

The mayo clinic says 54,000 fewer mammograms are taking place this year among women between the ages of 40 and 49. That's a 6 percent drop in screening among this age group. Experts say that may seem small but it's significant.

These latest figures come after the US Preventive Services Task Force advised against regular screening for women in this age group. It was a controversial announcement.

The Mayo Clinic and the American Cancer Society recommends that all women 40 and older have an annual mammogram.

They believe early detection can lead to better options and possibly less aggressive treatments.
