Peoria native Fulton Sheen closer to sainthood

June 29, 2012 (CHICAGO)

Pope Benedict XVI formally recognized what he called the "heroic virtues" of Bishop Fulton John Sheen on Friday.

Bishop Sheen grew up near Peoria and later gained fame as a radio and TV personality. He used his broadcasts to denounce communism. He died in 1979.

The announcement by the pope paves the way for Sheen's beatification, the last formal step before being made a saint.
