Police say the suspect posed as a gasoline delivery driver and said he needed to check the tank's fuel level. He was able to take the gas from a station's storage tanks.
The manager of the station said it is not unusual for gas to be pumped from the tanks and replaced. But this particular driver didn't leave any replacement fuel.
The stolen gas was worth about $8,500.
Two other convenience stores in Hammond have reported pump tampering, which allowed 350 gallons of gas to be stolen.
