No one can dispute the opportunities Title IX has created for girls seeking to play high school sports. Their number has increased tenfold since the law was signed in 1972. But there's a catch.

Title IX prohibits all schools that receive federal funds from discriminating on the basis of sex in any educational program or activity -- not just sports. Experts say science, technology, engineering and math classes are the new frontier for enforcement of the 40-year-old civil rights law.
