Younger people losing sight from diabetes

December 13, 2012 (CHICAGO)

Researchers report in the "Journal of the American Medical Association" that so-called non-refractive vision impairment, which includes glaucoma and cataracts, is up 20-percent.

This sort of sight loss typically occurs in old age, but the biggest jump was in adults ages 20 to 39.

Vision problems related to diabetes develop when fluid accumulates in the retina.

Doctors suggest better screening for anyone with diabetes.
