A newly proposed law in Illinois would require kids to attend school from the age of 5. Currently, children do not have to start school until they are 7 years old.

A recent Chicago Tribune investigation found nearly 18 percent of Chicago kindergartners and first graders were chronic truants.

Backers of the proposed law say it is necessary to get children in the habit of going to school as early as possible and to require parents to cooperate.
