For a long time, Americans have been told to cut back on salt. But it appears the restaurant industry may not be listening.

The consumer group The Center for Science tested 400 processed and restaurant foods for their salt content from 2005 through 2011 and found no change -- even though the recommended amount for daily salt consumption has gotten lower.

The average American eats 3,800 milligrams of salt a day and that's more than double what the American Heart Association advises.
