Stations between Damen and Racine were closed briefly Friday morning, and shuttles were put in place.
A fire near the Grand stop was quickly extinguished, but thick smoke in the tunnel forced passengers on trains that were already underground to leave after the trains pulled up to the nearest platforms.
No injuries were reported.
The fire was on a third rail chair, which is a mechanism that holds that rail up.
