Researchers studied 325 women who had a child with autism, and 22,000 women whose children did not have the disorder.
They found that women who lived in areas where they were exposed to higher levels of diesel particulates, lead, mercury and other pollutants were twice as likely to have a child with autism.
The study is published in Environmental Health Perspectives.
