AAA says 34.1 million Americans hit the roads this holiday weekend, a 4 percent increase over last year.
AAA says an improving economy, higher consumer confidence and lower gas prices are the biggest reasons for the increase.
The website tripadvisor.com says only 30 percent of people planned to hop on a plane during the long weekend.
