CHICAGO (WLS) -- An 18-year-old boy was killed Wednesday morning in an apparent drive-by shooting on Chicago's South Side, police said.

The teen and his friend had showed up to class at Excel Academy of South Shore, but were sent home this morning, said Liz Doss, mother of the victim's friend. The boy was wearing his school uniform when he was shot.

"I am feeling so hurt because this is a child that I see almost every day," Doss said.

Shortly before 10: 30 a.m., Doss came to pick up the boys. The victim was shot as he was crossing the street when someone drove by and started firing in the 2600-block of East 75th Street in the city's South Shore neighborhood, police said.

The victim was shot in the abdomen and hand and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where police said he was pronounced dead. Authorities have not yet released his identity.

No one is in custody. It is undetermined if the boy was the intended target.

Police said the shooter was in a black car. Doss said she heard three gunshots.

After the gunfire, Doss said she tried to keep him alive, taking off a shirt and holding to his stomach, after he collapsed in front of a post office.

"I keep thinking about what if that was my child," Doss said. "I just don't know how to feel because in a way I felt like I failed because he died."
