6-year-old girl shot on South Side

A 6-year-old girl was shot in Chicago's West Pullman neighborhood Sunday night, police said.

The child, identified by relatives as India Tinker, was getting out of a car in front of her home near West 123rd Street and South Perry Avenue around 9:10 p.m. Sunday, when police said a group of men pulled up and started shooting. She was struck in the arm.

A relative drove India to Roseland Community Hospital, where she was listed in good condition. She was later transferred to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

Katara Channell, India's aunt, said she was at the child's side for most of the night.

"It's terrible. All this stuff going on here in Chicago is terrible. It's ridiculous. A stop needs to come to this," Channell said.

No one is in custody.

India is the 26th child under age 13 to be shot in Chicago in 2016.

Nine people were killed and at least 43 others were wounded in shootings across Chicago over the weekend, police said. Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson held a press conference Monday morning, where said he is frustrated over the growing violence.

"Little kids getting shot out there is just stupid. It is. Everybody in here, CPD, you all (the media), the people that's watching this, should be upset that we're getting small children shot almost every day in the city of Chicago," Johnson said.
