Woman shot in Washington Park, Chicago police say
A woman was shot Saturday night at a park on South Ellsworth Drive in Washington Park, Chicago police said.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- The city of Chicago continues to grapple with gun violence, which impacts hundreds of people every year. As of July 7, 2024, there have been almost 1,200 total reported shootings in the city, according to the Chicago Police Department.

"We cannot take our eyes off the ball," Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said at a news conference following a violent July 4 holiday weekend. "We cannot stop thinking about the people who have been victimized by this crime."

While long holiday weekends often see a spike in gun violence, Chicago police and city officials are working to curb shootings and make the city safer.

Teen injured in Marquette Park drive-by shooting, police say

A 15-year-old boy was shot on Tuesday night in Marquette Park, according to Chicago police.

The teen was on the sidewalk around 10 p.m. when someone started shooting from a black SUV.

This happened in the 6300-block of Campbell Avenue, CPD said.

He was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the right leg. He is expected to be okay.

No one is in custody.

2 injured in Woodlawn drive-by shooting, police say

Two men were shot while standing in an alley in Woodlawn on Tuesday, Chicago police said.

The shooting happened in the 6600-block of Maryland Avenue around 5:43 p.m.

A 44-year-old man and 27-year-old man were in an alley when someone started shooting from a vehicle, police said.

The 44-year-old was show in the arm and the 27 year old was grazed in the head by a bullet.

Both were taken to the hospital and are expected to be okay. CPD did not say if anybody was in custody.

Man shot, killed while sitting in car in Jeffery Manor: CPD

A man, 38, was shot while sitting in a car in Jeffery Manor on Tuesday morning, police said.

The shooting happened around 8:44 a.m. in the 9600-block of Merrill Avenue.

The victim had multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to the hospital where he later died, police said.

He was later identified as Jeremy Mudd, according to the medical examiner.

A black sedan was seen fleeing northbound from the scene. No one is in custody.

Man shot, security guard injured in altercation in Chatham, Chicago police say

A security guard shot a person and suffered a broken finger after an altercation Tuesday morning, Chicago police said.

The incident occurred at about 8:30 a.m. in the Chatham Ridge Shopping Center in the 100-block of West 87th Street.

The security guard was struck and suffered a broken finger and fired his weapon, hitting a 28-year-old man in the wrist and ankle.

The security guard has a valid FOID and CCL, police said.
