CHICAGO (WLS) -- The city of Chicago continues to grapple with gun violence, which impacts hundreds of people every year. As of July 7, 2024, there have been almost 1,200 total reported shootings in the city, according to the Chicago Police Department.

"We cannot take our eyes off the ball," Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said at a news conference following a violent July 4 holiday weekend. "We cannot stop thinking about the people who have been victimized by this crime."

While long holiday weekends often see a spike in gun violence, Chicago police and city officials are working to curb shootings and make the city safer.

7-year-old boy among 2 shot, critically injured inside West Pullman home: police

A child and a man were shot and critically injured inside a South Side home on Monday evening, Chicago police said.

Police said the shooting happened in the West Pullman neighborhood's 11600-block of South Yale Avenue just after 9 p.m.

A 7-year-old boy and a 27-year-old man were in a home when someone inside white Audi sedan fired shots from the street, police said.

The child, who suffered a gunshot wound to the back and a graze wound to the head, was transported to Comer Children's Hospital in critical condition.

The man, shot in the chest and arm, was taken to Christ Hospital in critical condition.

There is no one in custody and Area Two detectives are investigating. Police did not immediately provide further information about the shooting.

16-year-old bystander injured in argument-turned-shooting on CTA bus in Chatham: police

A 16-year-old bystander was injured in an argument-turned-shooting on a CTA bus on Monday evening, Chicago police said.

Police said the shooting happened in the Chatham neighborhood's 8600-block of South State Street just before 5:30 p.m.

Two females were arguing when one of them took out a gun and fired shots, police said.

The gunfire struck a 16-year-old boy, who suffered a graze wound to his knee.

The Chicago Fire Department treated the victim and released him on the scene.

No one is in custody, and Area Two detectives are investigating.

Police did not immediately provide further information about the shooting.

Man shot, critically injured inside vehicle in River North: Chicago police

A man was shot inside a vehicle in River North early Sunday morning, Chicago police said.

Police said the shooting happened around 3 a.m. in the 200-block of West Hubbard Street.

A 33-year-old man was a passenger inside a vehicle when a white vehicle approached, police said. Someone fired shots before fleeing the scene.

The victim, shot above the right eye, was dropped off at Northwestern Hospital in critical condition.

No one is in custody and Area Three detectives are investigating.

Police did not immediately provide further information about the shooting.

Man found shot to death inside high-rise apartment in South Loop, Chicago police say

A man was found dead inside a high-rise apartment Saturday morning on the city's South Side, Chicago police said.

Police said they found the man at about 3:32 a.m. with gunshot wounds to his body near Cullerton and Dearborn in the South Loop.

What led up to the shooting was not immediately clear.

As of right now, no one is in custody.

Police did not immediately provide further information about the shooting.
