Student contracts meningitis in Bartlett

BARTLETT, IL The teenage girl was admitted to a hospital Friday.

Parents of students at the school have received a letter notifying them about the case.

Meningitis is an inflammation of tissues covering the brain and spinal cord.

"it's our understanding that the bacterial meningitis is more serious than viral, but at the same time, it's not as contagious, so the health departments from both Kane and DuPage County have recommended that we don't need to provide any sort of preventative measures with our students or staff," said Tony Sanders, school district spokesperson.

Bacterial meningitis is spread by close contact with someone who has the illness.
