Reducing salt intake won't help asthma

Previous studies suggested that following a low-sodium diet may help improve control, but researchers now say that advice should be taken with a grain of salt.

Researchers at the University of Nottingham in England compared the effects of a low-sodium vs. normal-sodium diet in nearly 200 asthmatic adults. All of the participants followed a strict low-sodium diet and either received sodium supplements equivalent to normal sodium intake or a placebo. After six weeks, they found no significant differences in asthma symptoms or lung function.

The study is published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.
