Unused airline miles for military families

CHICAGO Lieutenant Governor Pat Quinn is urging travelers to donate their unused frequent flyer miles to "Operation Hero Miles."

It's a program to help military families visit injured service members recovering in military hospitals worldwide.

It was started several years ago to help military families with modest incomes.

Quinn says, "We've really had a tremendous response from the people of Illinois. They realize that sometimes their miles may be expiring and when those miles when they are bound together with the contributions from many other people, we really can do something very, very important."

A number of area schoolchildren are helping raise the spirits of wounded soldiers. They created holiday cards that will be sent to the service members in hospitals around the world.
