This year's Christmas may be the last holiday for motorists to park free at Chicago parking meters. The city has leased the meters for 36,000 parking spaces to a private firm, effective New Year's Day, next Thursday, January 1.

The firm plans to charge for parking 24 hours a day - every day, including Sundays and holidays.

The $1.16 billion deal is the first time an American city has privatized its parking meter system.
