Man proposes after serious accident

February 13, 2009 (CHICAGO) He was severely hurt last week in an accident. But his worries went beyond his physical injuries.

"We had talked about getting married while we were dating but never...a specific date of when we'd get engaged or anything like that. And obviously we never thought it would be like this," said Ashley Quirke.

Neil Heyman and Ashley Quirke just got engaged but it almost didn't happen.

On February 3, Neil was hit by a car on his way home from school and was seriously hurt. One of the first things he asked about in the hospital was the diamond engagement ring that he was carrying in his coat pocket when he was hit. It was still there.

After spending seven days in intensive care, Neil felt well enough to pop the question so he did right from his hospital bed.

"She was sitting next to me I told her to stand up," said Hyman.

"I thought he was uncomfortable...he needed some adjustment but he was fine. ," said Quirke.

"So, I asked her to marry me right there. She said yes," said Hyman.

Saturday won't be a typical Valentine's Day for the coupl, but the bride-to-be doesn't mind.

"If I could be in this room with him having a normal happy Valentine's Day with him being healthy. I'd much rather be here," said Quirke.

The couple has not yet set a wedding date.
