Illinois State Police forensic labs are under fire due to a backlog of evidence tests. An auditor reports the number of uncompleted tests grew to more than 10,000 from 2002 to 2007. Meanwhile, the agency sat on money that could have accelerated results.

The audit also concludes that state police provided misleading or incorrect numbers to the governor and legislature about the size of the backlog.

The new state police director says there has already been improvement in completing lab tests.
