May 8, 2009 (SOUTH BEND, Ind.) --
Former Republican presidential candidate Alan Keyes and 21 others have been arrested on trespassing charges after marching on the University of Notre Dame campus to protest President Barack Obama's upcoming commencement speech.About 75 protesters gathered Friday outside the school's front gate for 35 minutes, reciting the "Hail Mary" and other prayers and listening to Keyes speak before about 30 of them walked onto campus, some intending to be arrested.
Those who were arrested were handcuffed and taken to the St. Joseph County Jail, where they faced being held on $250 bond.
The protesters are upset at Notre Dame for inviting Obama to speak at the May 17 commencement because of the president's support of abortion rights and embryonic stem-cell research.
