An extra-alarm fire destroyed a vacant house in Berwyn Friday morning and heavily damaged two neighboring homes. The fire apparently broke out in the basement of the two-story home on Elmwood just after midnight.

The frame house that was being rehabbed was leveled.

The fire spread to the houses next door causing heavy damage.

Firefighters rescued two families, including several children, but no one was hurt.

Nine people were given shelter by the American Red Cross.
