Legislation would coordinate fed, state efforts

October 5, 2009 (CHICAGO) On Monday, Kirk said gangs are a clear and present danger to many communities, but he says the problem has overwhelmed many suburbs.

Congressman Charles Dent of Pennsylvania has introduced legislation to coordinate federal, state and local efforts to fight gangs.

The deputy director of the Lake County Metropolitan Enforcement Group said currently when law enforcement cracks down on gangs they just move to other jurisdictions.

"I think what this legislation allows us is to continue to pursue those offenders and not allow them to re-establish their drug sales and their other illicit activities," said Jeff Padilla, Deputy Director, Lake Co. MEG

"These gangs represent large, criminal empires far bigger than anything Al Capone would have ever dreamed of," said Rep. Mark Kirk, (R) Candidate for U.S. Senate.

Kirk is running for u-s senate in the Republican primary election.
