Historic Chicago Bungalow & Green Home Expo 2009

October 13, 2009 10:07:48 AM PDT
Now more than ever, homeowners are looking for ways to invest in the homes they own. Whether they are restoring the historic character of their home, creating more usable space or making their home more affordable by increasing energy efficiency, owners are in need of a range of home improvement, restoration and "green" resources. The Historic Chicago Bungalow and Green Home Expo 2009 brings all of those resources and more together under one roof. Admission is free for the expo being held at the Merchandise Mart on October 17 from 10am to 4pm.

The Expo began in 2002 and has grown and evolved ever since. This year, visitors will have the chance to access the products, services and expertise of more than 100 trades people, crafts people, lenders and other exhibitors; attend more than 20 workshops; and hear well-known experts, including "The House Doctor" Bob Yapp; Kelly Edwards of HGTV's hit show "Design on a Dime," and Lou Manfredini of HouseSmarts TV and WGN radio. You can hear them at:

  • 10:30: Lou Manfredini will present "HouseSmarts: Getting the Most Out of Your Rehab for the Least Amount of Hassle and Money"
  • 12 noon: "The House Doctor" Bob Yapp will present "Preservation Doesn't Cost ? It Pays"
  • 2 pm: Kelly Edwards, host of HGTV's hit show "Design on a Dime," will show Expo-goers how to get the most out of their home design

This year there are two several "experts" booths that will run throughout the day. The "Ask an Architect" booth will provide visitors a chance to consult with professional architects about their home improvement project. The "Mortgage Check-Up" station will provide homeowners with answers to their questions about purchasing new homes and financing home improvement, renovation and energy retrofit projects.

Workshops will run all day during the Expo. Topics appeal to a wide range of interests and needs ? from "Designing your Dream Kitchen and Bath" to "Greening Your Vintage Home" to "Working with an Architect." There will be workshops focusing specifically on issues faced by owners of historic homes, like woodworking, avoiding the money pit and historic preservation. For those interested in green living and energy efficiency, there will be discussions on alternative energy strategies and ideas for "going green." And all homeowners can benefit from the workshops on money-saving tips, interior and exterior design ideas and advice on landscaping and kitchen and bath rehab.
