Driver dies in Lombard retention pond

October 19, 2009 Police were called around 8:15 p.m. Sunday near the parking lot of a restaurant at Myers and Butterfield roads. Someone from the restaurant jumped into the pond to try and get the driver out. But he was unable to get the door open before the car slid further under the water.

Fire department divers were called to search for the car.

"Obviously it is a mud bottom, mud and big boulders. They're trying to get to the bottom but they sink in the mud. The car was also in the mud. The difficulty is the car was hard to open," said Mike Torrence, Lombard Fire Department.

The driver of the car died in the accident. He was identified Monday as Ali Abbas, 29, of Oak Brook, Ill., according to the DuPage County Coroner's Office. The victim was pronounced dead at 9:42 p.m. at Good Samaritan Hospital.

Lombard police say Abbas' car struck two parked cars in the parking lot before going into the retention pond. No foul play is believed to be involved.
