Man charged in hit-and-run death

January 11, 2010 Darryl McGhee, 49, faces charges of failure to report a deadly accident, leaving the scene of a deadly accident, driving without insurance and not yielding to a pedestrian.

Police say McGhee drove a 2008 Suzuki Hatchback Friday in the 400-block of North Cicero Avenue that struck and killed an elderly woman in a crosswalk around 6 p.m.

Vivian Parker, 82, was pronounced dead Friday at 6:48 p.m. at Stroger Hospital.

Police said McGhee was arrested Saturday at 5 p.m. at 40 N. Lorel Ave. and the charges were approved at 11:38 p.m. Sunday.

Witnesses to the wreck gave police a license plate number of the vehicle involved, leading officers to 40 N Lorel Ave. where they saw the vehicle parked on the street with damage to its left front consistent with the accident, according to a police report.

Officers asked McGhee if it was his vehicle and he said allegedly yes, according to the report. When asked how it got damaged, he allegedly said, "I hit someone ... I got scared and left,'' according to the report.

The site of the accident is just a block from Parker's Austin neighborhood home.
