Study: Talk to kids to boost their language ability

May 19, 2010

Researchers say having young children engage in dialogue where they actually make a meaningful contribution to the subject can boost language ability.

Dutch researchers who followed 150 children for several years say these children did better in school at answering teachers' questions and following directions.

Additionally, parents who read to their children and initiated interesting conversations also gave them a head start in language skills.

The work was funded by the Dutch Program Council for Educational Research.
