A benefit was held Wednesday night for a program that encourages Chicago young people to develop reading, writing and critical thinking skills.

Open Book is an after school program involving hundreds of students.

At the benefit organizers honored four people who've helped with the group's mission: author Sharon Draper, State Farm insurance executive Craig Gilmore, state board of education secretary Vinni Hall and ABC7 president and general manager Emily Barr.

ABC7's Hosea Sanders was the emcee for the event.
