Pregnant drinking may harm offspring's fertility

June 29, 2010

In a Danish study of almost 350 young men, sperm levels were a third lower in those whose mothers had more than four drinks a week while pregnant.

Because the study was observational, researchers say they can not say for sure whether alcohol intake is causing low sperm concentrations. But, researchers say, if the findings are replicated in other studies it may help explain why sperm quality has dropped in recent decades.

The study was presented at the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology in Rome.
