A deal has been reached that will avoid layoffs among some state union workers.

Instead, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) will accept furlough days, less overtime, and its members will pay more for insurance.

In exchange, the state will not layoff employees or close government facilities before June 2012.

The deal is expected to cut state costs by at least $50 million.
