Average U.S. gas price passes $3 a gallon

The average gas price in the U.S. topped three dollars a gallon Thursday, the first time that has happened at Christmas. According to AAA, the national average price is $3.01 a gallon, the highest it has been in more than two years and 43 cents higher than a year ago.

Gas is more expensive on the west coast, the northeast, and right here in Illinois.

While gas prices are typically lower during the winter, they have increased this year as crude oil prices have climbed to more than $91 a barrel.
