Man, woman recovering after fall into Lake Michigan

One of the victims was in 60-year-old woman in a wheelchair.

According to police, the woman and a 59-year-old man had just left a party at approximately 9:45 p.m. Friday at the Columbia Yacht Club. The man reportedly was pushing the woman down a ramp when the two accidentally fell into the water.

Fortunately, the Chicago Police Department's Marine Unit was across the way. Officers responded to the call of a person in the water within two minutes. But by the time they arrived, what they found was the man holding on to the dock and trying to hold up the woman.

According to police, when they got the woman out of the water, only five minutes had passed since they received the call. Nevertheless, she was unconscious, was not breathing, and did not have a pulse.

""It feels good. We had just finished a first responder class with the rest of the Marine Unit. So, having the certification, we're allowed have oxygen and jump kits on the boat. And having it ready and having everybody work as a team, trained the same way, rescue people the same way, everything went off without a hitch," Officer Kevin Hitney of the Chicago Police Marine Unit.

The victims were rushed to Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The man was in serious condition, and the woman was critical. ABC7 is told the woman is now responsive and expected to recover.
