River dyed red in battle against Asian carp

November 16, 2011 (LEMONT, Ill.)

US Geological Survey scientists are using red dye along the river banks near Route 83 in southwest suburban Lemont.

The reddish tint will help scientists determine where the river may be moving into the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal.

Scientists are hoping to determine where openings are large enough in the bedrock for the destructive Asian carp to penetrate in an effort to keep the fish from reaching the Great Lakes.
