Surgeon general in Chicago to promote healthy living

December 8, 2011

Benjamin is working with communities, health professionals and businesses to come up with a road map to make it easy for people to stay healthy. She says people need to change their mindset and bring joy back to health by doing daily exercises that are fun and eating delicious foods that are healthy.

Benjamin says she knows from experience that prevention is key.

"My mother died of lung cancer," Benjamin said. "She started smoking as a teenager. My father died of complications of a stroke from hypertension and my brother died of HIV. All preventable diseases. There's no reason today that any family should suffer the loss of loved ones for something that could have been prevented, and we can prevent this."

The goal with the National Prevention Strategy is to increase the number of Americans that are healthy at every stage of their life.
