Study: Babies now born bigger than before

January 2, 2012 (CHICAGO)

Despite the larger birth sizes in recent generations, the data showed the size discrepancy largely disappeared by age 1, suggesting babies born smaller in the past experienced faster growth in the first year of life.

The study's authors say their findings suggest maternal health has gotten generally better since 1970, and growth rates in the first year of life do not explain trends toward obesity later on.

The study is published in the Journal of Pediatrics.
