Jury duty deserter sentenced with sign

January 30, 2012 (LAKE COUNTY, Ind.)

The judge ordered Justin Humphrey, who was a prospective juror, to stand in front of the courthouse wearing a sign, "I failed to appear for jury duty."

Humphrey was called as a prospective juror in a deadly drunk driving case and left after lunch. He held the sign for about half an hour and will be back at 7:30 a.m. next Monday, when he will again hold the sign for about a half hour.

The judge said he hoped to set an example by handing down the sentence and hoped to show the importance of jury duty for all citizens.
