Call for city to stop demolishing Chicago Housing Authority apartments

October 3, 2012 (CHICAGO)

An umbrella group is demanding that some of the city's low income resident be allowed to live in vacant CHA apartments. They say vacancies and the demolition plan undermine the city's plans to end homelessness.

"Public housing is not a bad word," said Jessie Avraham of the Jane Addams Senior Caucus. "Public housing is a safety net that needs to be preserved and not demolished never to be replaced again."

Members of the Chicago Housing Initiative say nearly 60,000 low income households are on CHA waiting lists.
