Study: 1 in 8 teens think about suicide

January 9, 2013

Harvard researchers found about one in 8 U.S. teens thought about suicide and nearly 1 in every 20 either made plans to kill themselves or actually attempted suicide.

Eighty- percent of these teens were receiving treatment and 55-percent didn't start their suicidal behavior until after treatment began.

Experts say this casts doubt on the value of the current professional treatments for teens with mental disorders and that prevention strategies are needed.
