She was killed Sunday night as she stood in the kitchen of her aunt's house in Calumet City.
Police say 20-year old Eric Brown is charged with first degree murder and aggravated battery with a firearm.
Police don't believe Ashaya was the target.
"It is a sad and tragic occurrence that this young lady had to lose her life for what appears to be no reason," said Edward Gilmore, Calumet City Police Chief.
Ashaya's family plans to hold a vigil Friday night in her honor.
