Levees, sandbags along rain-swollen Mississippi hold up so far

The flood threat remains as storms are expected to blow through the nation's midsection could keep water levels stubbornly high for a while.

The National Weather Service said the river had crested in the St. Louis area and the Illinois towns of Grafton and Alton further north.

But there was no such luck in southeast Missouri, where the river's levels were not expected to peak until sometime today.
