Sharon Schultz of south suburban Lansing also suffered a stroke. Her daughter Andrea stays home to care for her.
Adding to the family's struggles, Andrea's husband was injured on the job and cannot work.
Schultz receives social security but it's not enough to pay all the bills.
"It's really, really bad, to the point where we don't know how we're getting by day by day," Andrea Schultz said. "It makes me feel like I'm letting my mom down cause I can't do for her. We just have no means, no money."
Neighbors have tried to help. Andrea Schultz said between Nicor and ComEd, the family owes about $2,900.
