Retired journalist returns to Chicago after Ukraine protests

May 10, 2014 (CHICAGO)

He says it was a peaceful revolution for change and said the only violence came when riot police came and tried to chase away the protestors.

Sajewych says he was beaten by police in Kiev. Some might be surprised at how he describes his time in Ukraine.

"This was the greatest, most wonderful experience of my life, because I went there and there was like a magic about this maidan. A hundred thousand, 500 thousand, up to a million people getting together peacefully."

Sunday parts of eastern Ukraine will vote for independence.

It is not a vote to join Russia but could further destabilize an already tense region.
