Elderly warned of water dept. imposters

CHICAGO Police say the offenders are ringing doorbells and claiming to work for the water department. One offender tells the elderly homeowner he needs to check their water pipes in the basement. As soon as he is escorted into the home, the other offender enters and takes valuables.

Police say the incidents have occurred between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m.

The suspects drive either an SUV or a gray station wagon with a temporary license plate that is sometimes covered in cardboard.

Police warn that you should never open your door for any uninvited visitors or utility workers.
