The long-serving former chief circuit court judge of Cook County, Harry Comerford, has died.

He passed away Tuesday from pulmonary fibrosis at Glenbrook Hospital in Glenview.

Comerford was first elected chief judge of Cook County back in 1978. He held that position for 16 years and oversaw the circuit court's expansion to the suburbs and the expansion of the criminal courts operation at 26th and California.

Judge Comerford was 86 years old.
