About 1 million watch lakefront fireworks

CHICAGO An estimated one million people packed Grant Park and the lakefront to celebrate Independence Day on Thursday night at the city's annual fireworks show.

Thousands of fireworks shells and mortars fired from a barge off Monroe Harbor lit up the city skyline for the holiday tradition.

The show was a culmination of a day of festivities at the nearby Taste of Chicago and along the lakefront.

Thursday night's show did not disappoint the huge crowd. The crowd was estimated at more than 1.2 million people.

A smaller fireworks show is planned for Friday at the Taste of Chicago.
