Culinary institute upgrades facilities

CHICAGO The Washburne Culinary Institute celebrated its new digs with a ribbon cutting Wednesday morning. The chef and hospitality training school now operates as part of the City Colleges of Chicago.

The training center includes a training kitchen and a restaurant all at the 63rd and Halsted campus of Kennedy King College. It's something the school's chancellor says brings educational benefits well worth the administrative effort.

"We had budgetary challenges because of the students, I had the ace in the hole and we won," said Wayne Watson, chancellor, Kennedy-King College.

The new center opens in conjunction with Washburne's 70th anniversary. The training restaurant is open to the public and all the food is created by final-year culinary students.
