Study: Obesity may be contagious

New research shows most people feel good about themselves if they are about as heavy as the people around them. This may explain the rapid rise in obesity around the world. Researchers say that people are driven by comparison. They found that women were satisfied with their weight depending on how their body mass index compared with women their own age living in the same country.

Also, men who were overweight tended to be happier if the people around them were overweight too.

This study was presented at the National Bureau of Economic Research Conference in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
