New study questions preeclampsia, kidney failure link

But new research published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that among all women who had given birth at least once, the annual risk of developing kidney failure was only one in 27,000.

Preeclampsia is a condition where a woman develops hypertension during pregnancy.

The risk of preeclampsia was more than four times higher with the first pregnancy.

Researchers stress that they do not know whether the health problems are caused by the preeclampsia itself or if they were a part of underlying factor.
