Some parents of female students at a northwest Indiana high school are upset that the school has banned purses in the classroom for security reasons. Parents took their concerns about the ban at Hanover Central High School in Cedar Lake to the school board Tuesday night.

One parent stuffed pens, pencils, a calculator, feminine hygiene products and other items into her pockets to demonstrate how difficult it is.

Officials at the school of 575 students about 15 miles south of Gary began enforcing the purse ban this school year, adding to an existing ban on book bags.

Board President Patricia Kocot said the policy will be reconsidered after a new superintendent is hired. The board will begin interviewing candidates this weekend.
